Death Waltz Recording Company and One Way Static Records have joined forces and are overjoyed to be able to bring you the score to a truly iconic – or notorious – classic of the horror genre: Riz Ortolani’s music to the one and only CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, directed by Ruggero Deodato, for the first time on vinyl!

One of the early “found footage” films, this 1980 picture takes you into the heart of the Amazon rainforest. What follows is some of the most shocking material in a legitimate film. Due to the film’s heavy graphical on-screen violence it received heavy banning (in over 50 countries), censorship, heavy cuts, ‘Video Nasty’ classification and even confiscation by courts (resulting in a trial where Deodato was facing jail time) all over the world. This resulted in a controversy that still goes on this present day.

Part of what makes the film an unforgettable experience is the soundtrack composed by maestro Riz Ortolani. Ortolani is THE iconic Italian composer and orchestra director with a production background that spans from the cinema to the theatre, from classical music to television programs.

His film-score career started in 1962 with the soundtrack for the cult classic documentary ‘Mondo Cane’. The main song in the movie ‘More’ (sung by Katyna Ranieri) resulted in an Oscar Nomination in 1964 as “Best Theme Song” and won the Grammy Award as “Best Instrumental Theme”. More was recorded by more than one thousand of the greatest artists in the world with 70 million records sold. Ortolani was the fist Italian musician to receive such wide ranging, large recognition repeatedly over the years, both in Italy and abroad.

During the course of his long career, Ortolani directed prestigious symphonies all over the world and contributed many compositions to films of all genres and eras. More recently, his music was used on soundtracks for Grand Theft Auto, Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2, Drive & Django Unchained.

In 2013 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Soundtrack Academy. Riz Ortolani passed away on 23 January 2014 in Rome, aged 87. He will be missed but he lives on through his compositions, these will continue to touch the hearts of generations to come.

Riz Ortolani’s main theme is gorgeously dreamy, deceptively so. It’s a remarkable truth amongst horror soundtracks that some of the most effective music of the genre is aesthetically beautiful, and Ortolani’s theme certainly qualifies. But in being so pleasant, it does give off a false sense of security, certainly for the film. Some of Ortolani’s music is more overtly creepy, with more electronic elements blending with the orchestra to provide a harsher backdrop. But then that beauty is there again, juxtaposed alongside horrific elements to ask ourselves about whether beauty needs a context. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST stays with you – it’s notorious for a reason, and the soundtrack is no different.
